Day 23

This was another hard one, because I looked through my favorites list and got sidetracked with re-watching all the awesome things I liked. Anyhow, I finally chose this 2-part segment of Cookie Monster on Martha Stewart, where Cookie Monster is basically obnoxious and drives Martha crazy. It was the first thing I ever favorited and hope you enjoy it too.

Happy Friday!

Day 16

"Imagine" by Brunch

Okay, this one is kind of cheating, since it's not the actual song that makes me cry. (Especially because it's in Korean and I don't actually understand the lyrics.) It's the soundtrack song to the final part of a 5-part animated series called "There She Is!!" by a three-person animation team called SamBakZa.

The song is permanently linked to these videos for me and that last video almost always makes me cry, or at least tear up.

You have to watch all of these to feel the impact. Don't just jump to 5. (Banner links will open in a new window.)

Taking Care of the Ones You Love

Thanks, Tammi, for showing me the saddest video I have ever seen...
Or at least, I thought it was the saddest... until I found out there was an entire series of them.

These are by Thai Life, a long-standing life insurance company in Thailand who has established themselves as being highly committed to quality and dedication. These videos don't so much tug at your heart strings as they do rip through them, just like you are going to do with a box of tissues after you watch these.

After watching these, I got up and hugged my parents. You'll probably need a hug too.

Don't Stop the Sandman

Rock Sugar was the most up and coming 80s heavy metal rock band until an unfortunate out-at-sea gig left them stranded with only the 80s pop music for listening pleasure/torment.

20 years later, they have finally been rescued... but it seems that you "can take metal band off the deserted island, apparently you can’t take 20 years of exposure to 80’s pop out of the metal band."*

Nothing But A Red Towel

A couple weeks ago, I was refreshing my twitter madly because Ellen Degeneres said she was doing something at UCSD.

Yep, nice to see Tritons doing my alma mater proud.

And, Ellen, I love you but how could you flub and say UCSD was "the University of San Diego"? I'll forgive you if you give me tickets to your show, okay?

Lovely 4-Eyes

I just found the lovable our.city.lights by Diana, who shared this amazing gem on wearing makeup with glasses!

I usually just never bother with makeup because I always figured my glasses block it anyway but I'm going to be part of a wedding in a few months so I have to get dolled up. This video gave a very thorough guideline about how to bring out your eyes behind glasses... she's even Asian like me, which really helps with the eye shadow portion.

Definitely looking forward to trying out some of these tips and tricks!

Batman: TAS

I'm currently obssessed with watching Batman: The Animated Series/the New Adventures of Batman/The Adventures of Batman & Robin (which are all technically the same series, just renamed between seasons) on YouTube.

There used to be a back-to-back hour of Batman/Superman TAS's when I was a kid so this is basically reliving my childhood on YouTube. =P

I always liked Batman more than Superman. Superman always seemed like too much of a goody-two-shoes, especially the mild-mannered reporter aspect. Bruce Wayne was a confident and aggressive businessman/playboy millionaire in addition to his strict training regiments to be Batman.

And there was always all those psychologicals aspects of it, like his childhood trauma and how all his villains are literally insane.

My favorite episode was Girls' Night Out, which featured an all-female cast with Supergirl and Batgirl teaming up against the combined forces of Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and Livewire.

Here is part 1:

And of course, Part 2:

Enjoy!

Strung Up on the Vitamin String Quartet

As promised, here is my compliation of Vitamin String Quartet videos!

Brief descrition from Wikipedia:
"According to their website, The Vitamin String Quartet comprises a rotating collective of Los Angeles musicians widely known for its tributes to cutting-edge rock acts. They have released a series of string quartet tribute albums, released by Vitamin Records using a wide array of instruments, but primarily violins and violas.

"Vitamin String Quartet is about applying rock n' roll attitude to classical technique," says Tom Tally, a violist and arranger who has performed on and produced over thirty-five Vitamin String Quartet albums."

"We Will Rock You" - Queen

"Don't Speak" - No Doubt
I had no idea this song could sound even sadder but I was quite wrong.

"Wonderwall" - Oasis

"When You Were Young" - Killers

Check out their YouTube channel to see if they've covered your favorites!

Oh, and can I just say, as a former violinist, how different and refreshing it is to hear the cello actually play melodies instead of j

Commercial Appeal

Have you heard of Mozy? It's an online data backup program.

I recently skimmed by it on a Web application article and immediately recognized the name. But not because of the reviews or its service.

I remembered it from the commercials.

Mozy was advertising on Hulu for some time. I don't know if the ads are still going on Hulu because I haven't seen one in a while, but that is where I first saw it. The commercials usually featured someone using their computer in an average, everyday way and then something completely bizarre happens, like a stove falls out of the sky and directly on your laptop. Take home message: you never know what can happen to your computer.

But my favorite commercial was this guy who was clearly in a rush and accidently puts his laptop into the microwave instead of his frozen dinner. Yeah, I really felt for the guy too.

Here's the ad on YouTube:

I don't know if this was really the intent but this particular commercial really appealed to me, not because they were selling a useful or novel service, but simply because they essentially saying, "We understand that you are human and everyone has "OH %$&#!" moments in their lives."

"By the way, we have a service that can help you."

Weekend Finds

Fleur Avenue shared these fabulous closets to die for. (My favorite is Mariah Carey's... it looks just like a store!)

Unique laptop bags and covers, via Mental Floss, downstream from Funky Trend. (My favorite is the My Document one picture below.)

I also looked through the hilarious and ingenious (and sometimes just wrong) archives of There, I Fixed It, a tribute to DIY gone wrong. I actually recognized many of the photos from Fail Blog.

Did you know about Habitat for Humanity ReStores?? Verbatim from their website, they are
"retail outlets where used and surplus building materials are sold at a fraction of normal prices. Proceeds from ReStores help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat houses within their communities." (Found out about these stores from the Fierce Beagle.)

I'm addicted to SNL Digital Shorts (Andy Samberg is a riot and a half). From the minds that brought you the infamous D**k in a Box, comes Like A Boss andand Iran So Far Away. But I think I'm On A Boat and Natalie Raps are my favorites. (Mostly because I have the biggest crush on Natalie Portman.) The lyrics, despite the crude cursing, are the cleverest SNL has had in some time and the mockery of entire genres of music amuses me to no end.
(Note - all link are the censored versions but NSFW nonetheless.)

Oh, I'm also addicted to the Vitamin String Quartet but they are worth their own post. Coming soon.
